This Weird Little Hack Makes You 2X Productive Almost Instantaneously
Are you struggling to stay focussed and productive?
Then, I have an easy to use weird little hack that will make you 2X more productive almost instantaneously.
But before I get to the hack, let me tell you a quick story…
I was at the National Achiever’s Conference in Bangalore this weekend. I had the privilege to attend the lectures of some of the most powerful speakers and experts on the planet. People like Robert Kiyosaki, Les Brown, Gerry Robert, etc.
As I was listening to one of the talks, I stumbled upon this weird little hack.
What’s the hack?
Powerful Questions
Questions hook your mind and get you to pay attention. When a question is carefully constructed with the right words and phrases, it’s one of the best ways to get the attention of people.
Powerful questions can almost instantaneously change your thought process, affect your emotions and alter your behavior completely.
And if you’re having a hard time focusing and desperately want to increase your productivity, the best way forward is to ask the “RIGHT QUESTIONS” to yourself.
With that said, here are a couple of questions that you can ask to jumpstart your productivity and start operating at a whole new level…
Why Am I Doing This On A Daily Basis?
When everything is going against you and you really need to push yourself, the only way you can stay on track without losing focus is with strong, well-nurtured motivation. Without the motivation, it’s easy to fall off track and quit when things aren’t going the way you want.
And this little question – “Why Am I Really Doing This On A Daily Basis? Where Is It Going To Take Me 3 Years From Now? ” – will give you the perspective and the emotional energy you need to move forward and create the life you want.
How Can I Get This Done By X Time So I Have Y Time For Relaxation?
Almost every one of us is starved for time. We all want freedom and we just want to be done with our tasks, projects and deadlines so we can just be alone with ourselves. However, this rarely happens in our hectic work life.
And this is where Parkinson’s Law comes in handy. Parkinson’s law states that work expands so as to fill the time available for its completion.
If you give yourself a task and set a deadline of 2 hours, you will get that done in 2 hours. And if you take the same task and set a deadline of 4 hours, you will take 4 hours to get it done.
By asking yourself the question, “How Can I Get This Done BY X Time So I Have Y Time For Relaxation?” every now and then, you will be able to come up with great ideas to increase your effectiveness.
And ‘Y’ relaxation time is important because that’s what will motivate you and force you to push forward. You don’t have to take the relaxation time as soon as you are finished with Task X. You can move rest time to the end of the day if you’d like and complete a couple of other tasks before you take off.
What Is It That I Can Do Today That Will Have A Profound Impact On My Life 3 – 5 Years From Now?
As humans, we are naturally wired to think short-term. We are always assessing tasks and completing them based on their urgency. However, the most urgent tasks aren’t the ones that are the important.
Important tasks are tasks that will have a profound impact in the long-term (whether it is a week from now, a month, a year or a decade). Urgent tasks are tasks that will provide you temporary relief in the short-term but they aren’t necessarily important.
Examples of urgent tasks:
-
Taking phone calls right away
-
Replying to text’s, IM’s as soon as they arrive
-
Responding to emails
-
And so on
Examples of important tasks:
-
Drafting the report
-
Writing the blog post
-
Hitting the gym and completing your workout
-
And so on.
Our natural human tendency is to focus on the most urgent task. We assume that we’ll be able to get to the important task after we deal with the urgent task. However, this isn’t the case. In most cases, our time or energy runs out and we find ourselves procrastinating on the important tasks that will make a big difference in our life.
… And this is where this question can come in handy. Ask yourself either of the following questions to think long-term and really stay productive:
“What is it that I can do today that will have a profound impact in my life 3 –5 years from now?”
“Will I be proud of the task I’m doing right now in 3 – 5 years from now? Would it have made a big difference in my life?”
Just because urgent tasks are not important doesn’t mean you should avoid them all together. You just have to schedule them for later and focus on the important things first.
For example, this blog post needs to be published tomorrow and I also need to work on my marketing plan. My marketing plan is an important task because it has a significant long-term impact. However, this single blog post won’t have much of an impact on its own.
And that’s where scheduling comes in handy. By scheduling morning time to work on important things and then separate times later in the day to focus on the urgent stuff, you will be able to make significant progress on things that are important to you.
