Obliterate Procrastination!

4 Quick And Easy Steps To Overcome Procrastination And Get More Done, Period!

Almost every one of us procrastinates at some point in our lives. Even though we recognize the importance of doing something, we have an inherent tendency/temptation to put it off until later.

And in many cases, we tend to give into this tendency/temptation.

Let’s face it… Procrastinating on something once in a while may seem harmless but in the long-run, it can seriously impede your personal and professional progress.

I am no master in overcoming this trait, but over the years, I have managed to considerably reduce my own tendency to procrastinate and have made tremendous progress in my personal and professional life.

… And I’ve also helped many of my clients accomplish this. Just by helping them overcome their procrastination habit, I’ve seen profound changes happen in their personal and professional lives.

If they can do it, so can you.

With that said, here are a few key action steps that you can take to start obliterating procrastination from your life…

Get A Grip On The “WHY’

One of the first things I do when I get on introductory Strategy Calls with my clients is to help them get a grip on their “WHY” – the why they do what they do. And if you are serious about beating your procrastination, you need to understand your WHY.

Almost all of our actions are influenced by our wants and needs. It’s a no brainer that each one of us finds it far easier to follow up on things when we feel personally connected.

The key is to bring in alignment between what you are doing and what you really want. Most people don’t have this alignment and this is what causes the disconnect.

When there is perfect alignment between what you want i.e. where you are going and what you are doing right now, you will find yourself naturally drawn to it. You will feel more passionate and enthusiastic about whatever it is that you do.

The problem for most people is that they don’t really know what they want. And even if they do know what they want, they don’t really understand how “what they are doing right now” will help them get there.

So take some time off and truly introspect on the kind of life that you want for yourself. Then try to find the connection between what you are doing right now and where you want to go and how you will get there.

 Start Chunking Things Down

Another reason why many people put off certain key tasks/projects is because it feels gargantuan and they end up approaching it with the same mindset.

Your mind can’t really think on more than one thing at a time. Doing so will only cause fatigue. So when you are trying to work on a big project or a task, your natural tendency will be to procrastinate – because there are just too many moving parts to handle and control.

… And this is where chunking comes in handy. Every single major project, task or goal can be broken down into a small series of steps.

Take the huge task out and break it down into few concrete steps that will take less than 10 minutes to get done. This will help eliminate overwhelm and the fear inside of you and help you get things done.

Start Easy And Small

Have you tried pushing a stationary car? It’s incredibly hard to push the car at the beginning. But once momentum builds, it’s relatively easy to keep pushing.

And if you are really serious about overcoming procrastination and creating the life you want, you need to learn to ride this momentum wave. I have been able to accomplish several amazing things in my life by simply riding the momentum wave.

Begin by taking small positive steps that are extremely easy to do. Our mind loves to accomplish things that are simple and easy. You just have to nudge it a little.

So if you break your tasks down and just nudge yourself a little every now and then, you will develop momentum and you can easily ride it.

Never Beat Yourself Up

Another thing I’ve noticed most people do is that they tend to beat themselves up whenever they procrastinate. Beating yourself up whenever you procrastinate will only pull you deeper into the abyss of procrastination.

Adopt a different approach instead. Be nice and kind to yourself. When you are not hard on yourself, you will get started sooner and will overcome setbacks easily.
